Volunteer

From time-to-time we really need our friends and neighbors to give us a hand with various tasks that are fun and educational. Currently, we are girdling over-aged poplars according to our forest stewardship plan. These will be left in place as wolf-trees to serve as homes and perches for wildlife. We also would love some help protecting some our better small pines along the lake slopes. We will be soon mounting a campaign to plan more pines along the south-facing slopes.

Please fill out the form below if you would be willing to volunteer to help. We may also be able to teach you some methods to use to improve your own forest property. We will let you know when opportunities arise!

Marcia is adjusting a shelter around a growing white pine volunteer. In the background you can see a girdled popular to leave as a wolf-tree. Girdling is best done in spring when sap is running and the bark can be removed more easily from a large ring around the tree. Removal by girdling is an excellent way to “release” more desirable trees so they can grow faster.
If you like to snorkel or SCUBA, please consider joining us in planting more “coarse woody debris” (aka sticks and logs). These make excellent structure for protection during spawning and are terrific sites for growing some of the food items that fish love. We usually do this mid-summer when snorkeling is most comfortable although we do check in on our habitats in winter months by putting cameras through the ice.

Please let us know, below, if you would like to join us in any of these fun and educational activities.
